AI InterviewerCambridge-style interview

InterviewerHere are five students and their friendships. Draw the network and work out each person’s utility.

You, spokenLet me draw it first. Asha, Ben and Cara are a triangle… then Cara to Dev, and Dev to Eli. So: Asha 10, Ben 14, Cara 17, Dev 12, Eli 7.

InterviewerNow add 2 for every friend of a friend who isn’t already a friend. What changes?

You, spokenDev jumps from 12 to 16, because he’s the bridge. And the Cara–Dev friendship helps Asha and Ben, who didn’t choose it.

InterviewerAsha and Eli could be friends, worth 3 each, but it costs each of them 4. Does it form?

You, spokenAsha gets 3 plus 2… actually no, she already reaches Dev, so just 3. That’s less than 4, so she says no.

Interview ended · feedback ready

An illustration of a session and the feedback that follows, on a question from a real Cambridge interview. The interviewer replies to what you actually say, so no two sessions run the same way. Answer out loud or type.

Why a question list is not enough

A list tells you what might be asked. It cannot show you how you sound answering it, and that is what tutors judge. These are the mistakes we see most, and what the pack does about each.

Going quiet, then giving a finished answer

The AI Interviewer in the Applicant Pass hears you think aloud and gives feedback on how you reasoned, not just where you ended up.

Rehearsed answers to famous questions

The commonly asked classics come with the twists tutors use on rehearsed candidates. Most questions will be new to you, as they are in the room.

Freezing on unfamiliar maths

Every maths question is worked step by step, with the technique named at each step, so you have a way in.

Losing the thread under pushback

Every question comes with the follow-ups a tutor might ask, and the AI Interviewer follows up on your own answer.

Missing the theory a question needs

Each question says what you need to know and links the Ceteris lesson that teaches it.

Not knowing what tutors reward

A mark scheme for each part, written by an Oxbridge economics admissions tutor, with the weak moves to avoid.

A method for any question, not answers to memorise

An interview tests how you work through a problem you have not seen. So the pack teaches seven moves that work on any question, and labels them in every model answer and in every piece of AI feedback.

  1. Pin it downRestate the question and clarify it
  2. NarrateThink aloud all the way through
  3. Start simpleThe obvious point, an extreme case, small numbers
  4. Assume out loudSay the simplification and what it rules out
  5. Take the hintUse what the tutor adds, visibly
  6. Check itTest the result and fix errors
  7. LandA judgement you can defend, or update

How it sounds in the room

Pin it down “So I walk two steps from each person. Inside the triangle everyone is already friends, so those don’t count.”

Check it “Asha gets 5 too. Actually no, she already reaches Dev through Cara, so she only gets the 3.”

Land “The group gains 10 against a cost of 8. It should form and doesn’t, because Ben’s gain isn’t counted.”

From the model answer to the question below.

Try a real interview question

The questions are in the style tutors ask, written by an admissions tutor who prepares applicants for these interviews. Three come from a real Cambridge Economics interview, including this one. Answer it out loud first, then open what you need to know, the mark scheme and the examiner’s report.

Questions

Which courses is this for?

Economics at Cambridge; Economics and Management, PPE and History and Economics at Oxford; HSPS, Land Economy and History and Politics; and economics degrees at other universities that interview. The questions test economic reasoning, which every economics interview looks for.

Are these real interview questions?

Three come from a real Cambridge Economics interview. Twenty are the questions most often reported online, written in our own words with the twists interviewers use on candidates who have rehearsed them. The rest are new, written in the style tutors ask, because an interview tests how you handle a problem you have not seen.

What does the AI Interviewer do?

It opens with a question from the pack, a Cambridge-style maths problem followed by a discussion, or your own personal statement. You answer out loud (your browser turns speech into text) or by typing, and it follows up on what you said, as an interviewer would. At the end it writes feedback: what went well, what to change and what a stronger answer would have done, with a score out of 5 on each criterion, the mark scheme points you reached, and the techniques you used and missed. It comes with the Applicant Pass. If you already hold the Applicant Pass without it, you can add it for £100.

How does the student sign in?

After paying, the student is signed in straight away, and the order confirmation email carries a sign-in link. Use the student’s email address at checkout if the student will be the one practising.

We already have a Ceteris membership. What does a pass add?

Membership covers Learn and the games. The packs add the interview questions and mark schemes, the TMUA and TARA mocks, parent reports and the certificate, and the Applicant Pass adds the AI Interviewer. The pass also includes the full library, so a member does not need both.

We are applying from outside the UK. Is this for us?

Yes. Oxford interviews are held online and many Cambridge Colleges interview online too, so the preparation is the same wherever the student lives. Prices are shown in pounds, US dollars, Singapore dollars or Hong Kong dollars, and you pay in the currency you choose.
